Atmospheric Sciences Subnet

All computers within the department of Atmospheric Sciences will be moved to the 134.129.222 subnet on Thursday September 10, 2009. The reason for the move is that the number of computers needing wired network access has grown above what can be supported on half of the 134.129.214 subnet. What the move means to computer users within the department is that all dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) networked computers will need to have their network connections flushed and all static IP networked computer will have to be reconfigured to use the new subnet.

Andrew Kuelbs (SCC) will be going around to perform the necessary network changes on computer systems on Thursday starting at 9:00 AM. The network reconfiguration takes only a few minutes to perform and does not require a system reboot. Please let Andrew Kuelbs, David Delene or the SCC Help Desk know if you experience any problems after the network switch over. For people that would like to complete the network reconfirmation for their own systems themselves, instructions are given below.

Also, as part of the network switch over, computers that print directly (with out using a printer server) to printers will be switched to using the Aero2 print server. In preparation to moving over to the new network, it is a good idea now to ensure all systems are using the Aero2 print server. Instructions are given for Linux and Windows XP system on the Wiki.

With the move to the new subnet, we will have more static IP address available and can give systems that can benefit from an static IP address but do not currently have one, a new static IP address. Please send new static IP address requests to a member of the IT committee (David Delene, Gretchen Mendore, Mark Askelson).

Flushing Network Settings on Windows XP

  • Open the 'Control Panel'
  • Select 'Network Connections”
  • High light the wired network connection you are using and right click
  • Select 'Repair'

Configuring Static IP Settings for the 134.129.222 Subnet

All current (214 subnet) static IP systems will be moved to have the same last number on the 222 subnet. For example aitken.atmos.und.edu which was 134.129.214.33 will have a new IP of 134.129.222.33. The rest of the network setting information for the 134.129.222 subnet is given below.

  • Gateway: 134.129.222.1
  • Subnet: 255.255.255.0
  • Broadcast: 134.129.222.255 (Typically not needed)
  • First DNS: 134.129.212.43 (Not changed)
  • Second DNS: 134.129.212.73 (Not changed)

Once the network switch is reconfigured on Wednesday morning (9:00 AM), all systems using static IP address will need to be changed to using the above information. On Redhat Linux systems, this can be done by:

  • Selecting the 'System/Administration/Network' pull down menu to bring up 'Network Configuration'
  • Deactivating the wired network by highlighting the network and using the 'Deactivate' button
  • Editing the network by selecting the 'Edit' button. Enter the above information and save.
  • Activating the wired network again by using the 'Activate' button
